Nitin Gadkari has approved Rs 1,427.61 crore for the construction of a 4-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83 in Tamil Nadu.
The 14.9-km project also includes the construction of two additional Road Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A. According to the minister, the project is aimed at strengthening connectivity between major industrial hubs such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam, thereby boosting regional economic activity.
The bypass will start from the Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai stretch and pass through key locations including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathy Colony.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly ease congestion in Thiruvarur town, reduce travel time by around 15 minutes, and improve road safety by diverting traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas.
The alignment will also improve connectivity to State Highways 23 and 65, as well as the renowned Thyagaraja Swamy Temple.
