Indian benchmark indices are expected to open on a weak note on July 22, with GIFT Nifty trading around 24,114.50 in early trade, indicating a negative start for the markets.
In the previous session, domestic equity benchmarks extended their losses for a second consecutive day amid volatile trading. Selling pressure in heavyweight private banking stocks and persistently high crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment, offsetting optimism from strong corporate earnings and the continued resilience of the broader market.
On Tuesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 77470.11 down by -238.41 points or by -0.31 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24187.7 down by -50.8 points or by -0.21 %.
On the global front, most Asian markets were trading higher, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street following better-than-expected earnings reports from major chip firms. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi were trading 1.93 per cent and 6.01 per cent higher, respectively.
Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 settled 0.74 per cent and 0.89 per cent higher, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite ended 1.29 per cent higher.
