India Seals First Major LPG Import Deal with the US for 2026

India has finalized its first-ever structured LPG import agreement with the United States, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday. Under the one-year contract, Indian PSU oil companies will import around 2.2 MTPA of LPG from the US Gulf Coast in 2026—amounting to nearly 10% of India’s annual LPG imports.

The breakthrough deal follows a visit by officials from IndianOil, BPCL, and HPCL to the US from July 21–24, 2025, where they held discussions with major American producers using the Mount Belvieu benchmark. The agreement is aimed at diversifying India’s LPG supply sources and strengthening long-term energy security.

Puri highlighted that, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, PSU oil companies have consistently provided LPG to Indian households at some of the lowest global prices. Despite global LPG prices rising over 60% last year, Ujjwala beneficiaries continued to receive cylinders at ?500–550, with the government absorbing the difference—spending over ?40,000 crore to shield families from the price surge.

The Minister said the US sourcing deal is another major step toward ensuring affordable and reliable access to clean cooking fuel for millions of Indian households.
