The Geological Survey of India (GSI), under the Ministry of Mines, will host an International Seminar titled “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future: 175 Years of GSI” on 20–21 November 2025 at the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC), Jaipur, as part of its year-long celebrations marking 175 years of establishment.
The inaugural session will be addressed by Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Coal & Mines, in the presence of Shri Piyush Goyal, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and Shri T. Ravikanth, Principal Secretary, Mines & Petroleum, Government of Rajasthan.
The event will be led by Shri Asit Saha, Director General, GSI, and Shri Vijay V. Mugal, Additional Director General and HoD, Western Region, along with senior officials, renowned geoscientists, and delegates from India and abroad.
Founded in 1851, GSI has played a pivotal role in geological mapping, mineral exploration, identifying strategic and critical minerals, geohazard assessment, and advancing geoscience research. The seminar will gather global experts to discuss emerging challenges, technological innovations, and future directions in geosciences.
The two-day programme includes 9 plenary lectures, 19 special lectures, and more than 300 scientific and poster presentations across 11 themes. Participants will include scientists from the British Geological Survey (BGS), United States Geological Survey (USGS), Geoscience Australia, and leading universities such as Lancaster University (UK), University of Michigan (USA), University of Texas (USA), and the Italian National Research Council.
An exhibition featuring advanced technologies, geospatial tools, and innovative solutions will be organised alongside the event. The seminar will also witness the signing of MoUs with IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur to strengthen collaboration in frontier geoscience research and capacity building.
Marking a major milestone in GSI’s legacy, the International Seminar reaffirms the organisation’s continued commitment to scientific excellence, sustainable resource development, and global knowledge exchange as it enters its 175th year of service to the nation.
