The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals, based on data received from various central and state government departments, an official statement said on Wednesday.
UIDAI sourced information on deceased persons from the Registrar General of India (RGI), state and union territory authorities, the public distribution system, the National Social Assistance Programme, and other government bodies.
As part of a nationwide effort to enhance the accuracy of the Aadhaar database, these outdated Aadhaar IDs were removed. UIDAI also said it plans to collaborate with financial institutions and other organisations to obtain additional data on deceased individuals going forward.
