India has significantly strengthened its Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) performance, improving by 79 ranks in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report, reaching 63rd position in 2019, the government informed Parliament.
After the discontinuation of the Doing Business Report, the World Bank launched the B-READY Assessment in 2024, covering 180+ countries across the full business lifecycle. India will be part of the third B-READY report, scheduled for release in 2026.
To improve the business climate, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has implemented wide-ranging reforms under the Business Reforms Action Plan (BRAP) and Reducing Compliance Burden (RCB) initiatives. Over 9,700 reforms have been carried out across States and UTs, while 47,000+ compliances have been reduced, digitised, simplified, decriminalised, or eliminated in the past five years.
Key initiatives such as the Jan Vishwas Act, National Single Window System (NSWS), and decriminalisation of business laws have helped cut regulatory overlaps, lower compliance costs, and improve transparency.
